    Camps 08/20/2019

My 7 year old daughter had a great time at Bothin, her first time at sleepaway camp. She made a couple of good friends and came home very happy. Her session was "Classic Camp" for 5 nights. Girls do not have to be Girl Scouts to attend but do have to be going in to 4th grade in order to participate in the Ropes course. The girls did most activities with their unit but had a few choices to make. There is a swimming pool and during the 5 day session the girls swim 2-3 times. But the water is pretty cold. There were a few things I wasn't thrilled with: the girls are grouped into units of something like 24 girls with 4 counselors. So, yes, there is a 1 to 6 counselor-to-camper ratio but it's really a 4 counselor-to-24 camper ratio, meaning that girls don't get much, if any, individualized attention. My daughter is 7 and was totally psyched to go to camp and have some independence but no one made sure she brushed her teeth or put on sunscreen or drank water (it's hot up there in Marin). I know some people will say, "yeah, whatever, she survived and had a great time, right?" Yes, she did, but it's possible for kids to have a great time AND to be well taken care of. She came home with very sunburned lips that made it hard for her to smile for 2 days. I really think they should have smaller units of girls with 1-2 counselors. I thought that camper arrival day was extremely poorly organized. There were people who told us where to park and there were people stationed all over the place but after we were told where to park that was it, no further instructions. We wandered around looking for people to ask. After finally checking in we went to her cabin and went upstairs. There were something like 20 girls up there, and ONE counselor who deep in conversation with one very concerned mother. So of the three rooms we had NO idea where our daughter should be. We waited for at least 20 minutes until that ONE counselor was done and even then she didn't greet us or tell us where to go. Later we were greeted by one of the 4 counselors and she explained that the others were busy around camp. But I had a very uneasy feeling leaving my daughter in that large house with only counselor (who by then was downstairs) and up to 30 very young girls. Our daughter did not get any of the mail we left for her - it was to be delivered to her on 4 of the days she was there, but it was not. She had a great time and wants to go back but I have concerns. Also, she is a Girl Scout and it is a Girl Scout camp but, as far as I can tell, most of the counselors are not Girl Scouts.
